WHAT IS THE BEST SEASON FOR ELOPING IN SCOTLAND

You can often hear in Scotland: "If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes." However, in my opinion — based on my previous elopement, hiking and tour guiding experience — the best months for eloping in Scotland are from September to May. The autumn and winter lights over the breathtaking sceneries are unlike anything else in the UK. Still, The Scottish Highlands and Islands will be magical all year round, whatever the weather.

ELOPING IN SCOTLAND - LEADS YOU TO CREATE A STRESS-FREE DAY YOU WILL NEVER REGRET

What is your favourite season of the year? It could be your perfect time to elope to Scotland, too.

Spring months (March, April and May)

The weather starts to warm up during springtime, with average temperatures from 8-16°C (46-61°F); in May, it can be 20°C+.
Usually, in the middle of the Scottish Highlands, snowcaps remain on the higher peaks of dramatic mountains. The days begin to get longer, and you can expect the landscape still in brown and golden tones, but to start getting green, also the hillsides turn into blue and lilac because of the blooming of bluebells and Scottish heathers in May.

Please note, the tourist season starts in May, with more visitors from all over the world makes the roads busy and travelling slower on the narrow Scottish roads.

Summer months (June, July and August) - When I do not work in 2025

Summer is the most popular and busiest time in Scotland. The days are warmer and more prolonged ( in June, there are up to 18 hours of daylight ), often with heavy showers in summer. The rugged landscape of the Scottish Highlands and Isles is blooming in a million tones of green, but the light - the most crucial element in photography - can be very strong and harsh during the day between 10am-5pm. I highly recommend the morning and evening times with beautiful summer lights. Please remember that during the summer, the Isle of Skye, Glen Coe, and other famous locations are overwhelmed by tourists. It is hard to avoid the high number of people around. The tourist season is at its peak, and it is harder to book the right accommodation.

One of the main reasons I do not work in the summer is that there are just too many tourists and midges ( tiny bloodsucker flies ) around that time of year.

Autumn months (September, October and November) - Absolutely the best time to visit Scotland

The weather starts to cool down in autumn, with average temperatures ranging from 8-14°C (46-57°F). September can be the warmest month, with 18-20°C (64-68°F). This is the most colourful time in Scotland as the vegetation changes its colours, creating a beautiful autumnal landscape with a more brown and golden colour scheme in November. The autumn light is rich, warm, and golden-toned, especially around sunrise and sunset. Often, we have heavy showers and annual storms that can create extremely dramatic conditions with high winds, also the first snow arrives in November.

October and November are my favourite time in Scotland to work on elopements.

Winter months (December, January and February)

Winter is the coldest and my favourite season in Scotland, with the average temperature usually around -2-5°C (28-41°F) and the most precipitation in the year - with snow in the higher grounds and peaks of the Scottish Highlands. Usually, on the West Coast of Scotland and the Islands like the Isle of Skye, winters are very windy, which I love as the wind creates great floating dress images and more drama on the photos. Also, the winter days are shorter - we have only 6-8 hours of beautiful soft daylight in the Scottish Highlands.
I highly recommend these months of the year for those who do not mind some wind, rain, sleet, or snow on their elopement day and can ignore the elements to fully enjoy their marriage and photos taken at fantastic locations with wild epic conditions.
